Dr John Wreglesworth

A gift to create undergraduate scholarships in History

Dr John Wreglesworth stands by a building, holding paperwork.

Dr John Wreglesworth was born in Spennymoor, County Durham, and grew up close to the city of Durham.  As the son of a bricklayer, and the oldest of four children, he was the first person in his family to attend university.  John’s love of learning started as a child, when he would borrow his mother’s library card to visit the library and then walk home, already engrossed in his book.  John went on to study History at Manchester University and subsequently received his doctorate in History from the University of Leeds.

John cared deeply about helping others learn.  He trained as a teacher, and proceeded to not only teach school-aged children, but also deliver a highly successful Access course in History to help adult returners to education.  Additionally, as the first generation of his family to attend university, John was passionate about enabling others from similar backgrounds access Higher Education.  Because of this passion, we worked with John’s loved ones to create a scholarship in his memory.

The Dr John Wreglesworth Scholarship is designed to support state educated students from the North-East of England who would need financial assistance to access higher education.  As John was an enthusiastic History scholar himself, the scholarship is available to students who wish to study an undergraduate degree in History.

University student
I am extremely grateful to be the recipient of such a generous scholarship. As far as my university experience goes, this will make such a huge difference to what I am able to participate in and to the quality of my studies. I intend to make use of this scholarship to its full extent, with regards to societies, social events and bettering my academics. This scholarship will enable me to also pursue my wider interests in my degree subject outside of term time.
