Congratulations and Welcome to the Department of Computer Science

Congratulations on gaining a place to study Computer Science in Durham! You are joining us at such an exciting time.

This is a really amazing time to join us and take your interest in Computer Science further.  At Durham we are growing our Department and the opportunities this affords to students.

And it’s an exciting time for the discipline - with graduates being much in demand and pioneering research covering some key topics of our time.

I’d like to warmly welcome you to both Durham, and to being a Computer Scientist. Enjoy your studies, enjoy the many other activities that are on offer at University, and enjoy Durham!

Computer Science here is intriguing and challenging in the best way: lots of breadth, with room to go deep in what notably engages you, which may even be something new. For your first year, try things early — from societies to side projects — because some things don’t stick (that’s expected: I tried both boxing and lacrosse). Ask questions: use practicals and friends, and pair up to learn Git sooner than you think. Don’t panic if you don’t understand something; chances are others don’t either. Be open and friendly, especially early on. Keep balance: work, sport, and sleep all matter. Build relationships, be curious, and enjoy the place. Good luck, and have a brilliant time!

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
